Open Question: Aspergers: pros and cons of getting formally diagnosed?
Hi ! I am 19 years old and female and in my first year of university. I am very certain that I have aspergers, however I have a few concerns before being formally diagnosed. How will it affect my qualification for health insurance? and will the formal diagnosis prevent me from being employed? I also wish to attend law school, and I am wondering if they will turn me down if I am formally diagnosed?
Although for the most part I function very well in society and have had a few very good jobs in the past (one for which I am returning too this upcoming summer in an insurance company!) It has really affected my time at University so far especially in my tutorials where we are asked a question that anyone can answer for participation marks, and I never get these marks becasue by the time I can put my ideas together into a few sentences, the topic has already changed 3x ! I have always been socially.. quirky and overall very shy and quiet.. but I have some very amazing friends who love me becasue of the way I am, however sometimes its very difficult to meet new people.. which has been especially hard here at Uni. I also have problmes with the tone of my voice ( I will be yelling but I think I am being very quiet) I have always excelled academically, however staying organized is a huge problem.
Just to clarify I have many reasons for being certain that I have this.. these were just the ones that others might notice.. and another one that people notice is my palilia .. when I say something I immediately echo myself under my breathe, but most people are just used to me doing this as I have done it my whole life.
I feel at this point the diagnosis would help me as I could finally get the help that I need .. however before I do I just want to make sure its the right thing to do.. as without the formal diagnosis I will survive life just fine but not very happily, but I will make do if the diagnosis will hinder my future for law school, employment, insurance.. etc
