Open Question: Need financial advice on on situation?
My husband and I are trying to conceive. But long the way we have ran into a few snags. One of which was my husband's job loss. He lost his job in June 2011 and has worked a couple of temps jobs but was finally hired in (part time) for a position two months ago. He is still continually looking for a better compensation and full time work. I have THANK GOD held on to my job for the last 11 years. We were told last May 2011 that I would only be able to have children through IVF. Devastated by the new and disappointed that our health insurance doesn't cover the expenses. I was able to secure a loan for $5000 in October 2011. Half of the IVF fee and medication cost which is about $10k. My husband stated he would put up the other $5K. Present day we have a car not running(engine blew) and we sold a rusty car for $500. We were talking to a relative that has a dealership and he promised us a car for $800. Once we sold it and contacted this relative he then "he hawed" about not having anything available, blah blah. My husband and I then went to three dealerships and were blown away by the amount for cars. My husband doesn't want to put a lot of financial burden on me and we made an agreement that he would pay for the car ins on the newer vehicle and I would pay the car note. I applied for an auto loan was approved for $10K @ 4.08%. My husband feels awful about out situation of not finding steady work, He has Bachelor degree in Accounting. I have a BBA. We talked about getting a trade in on the car not working with a certified car so the expense of maintenance would not be out of pocket for a time period. But I was also thinking that since we are still short on IVF funds split the money in half. 5k for car, 5k for IVF and have hubby help pay for the loan. I'm just trying to make a good choice here. Our other option is to fix the car we already have which will be about $3500, fix my current car with a major tune up and cosmetic repairs(which we were doing anyway) and put the rest of the money up for IVF.
We also have been looking on Craiglist at private sellers who have beautiful cars as well but this is a risky venture as well. What would you do?
