Open Question: Romney has said he supports some provision of healthcare reform. How does he he plan to pay for them?

“He has promised to launch a repeal effort on his first day in office if elected but said Thursday he supported some of the most popular provisions of the Obama law -- such as preventing denial of coverage for people with pre-existing conditions and allowing those up to age 26 to stay on family policies.”

However, the very purpose of the individual mandate is to fund those provisions. Should those provisions be enforced and the individual mandate not, someone really could wait until they were seriously ill, then purchase healthcare insurance.

How can one support the prohibition against exclusions for preexisting conditions and lifetime caps but not support the individual mandate?

I think we could agree that single payer was probably the best route, but that isn’t politically viable yet. It will be in the future, just not yet.
