Open Question: What happens when I check myself into a mental hospital? How do I do that?

I'm curious, I have sever OCD, depression, suicidal thoughts and I'm starting to think that my OCD was diagnosed wrong and that I'm instead bipolar. I have do not have health insurance at the moment because I am now 21 and I'm in between jobs. Can I still check myself into a mental hospital? Is it going to cost me an arm and a leg to get the help I need? When will they let me out if I go voluntarily? If I'm reported am I checked in and is it free? Please some enlightenment would do wonders.
