Open Challenge to Libertarian Peter Schiff
From the Majority Report, live MF 11:30am EST and via daily podcast at Majority.FM Earlier in the week, Sam Seder was a guest on Peter Schiff's radio show. Open Question: What to do if the hospital did not accept my health insurance during an ER visit, but now they do?
In August 2011, I had severe abdominal pains so I went to the emergency room. I didn't know it, but 1 month prior to my ER visit, they stopped accepting my insurance ( HMSA- Blue Cross Blue Shield). After a "nuclear x-ray" was done ( which cost almost $10,000 by itself) they found a kidney stone. I've been dealing with this big headache for the past few months and the hospital is expecting me to pay a $13,000 bill because my insurance does not want to cover me since they are not a BCBS participant. I went today to talk to them about my bill and they said they DO accept my insurance as of 11-11-2011. Since the hospital was not accepting my insurance at the time of my visit, am I going to be held liable? Or, can my insurance company try to work something out with the hospital since they are partners in the program now? It was only for 4 months that they were not taking my insurance, which is very unfortunate and very unlucky timing for me, but I'm hoping I can do something about it. They've already established that I am not eligible for Medicare ( or Medicaid, I forget) and I'd have to apply for charity payment assistance. I'm a full time college student with no job, so I need all the help I can get. Thanks.
