Analysis of the head-to-toe physical exam for new patients - by Micahel Guth, PhD, JD

Is the head-to-toe physical exam cost effective for healthy new patients who are asymptomatic? Or is it a legacy of primary care physicians' desire to bill health insurance as much as possible? If you search on the Internet for "annual physical" and "outdated" or "cost effective" or "practically worthless," you will find many web pages that present evidence that the typical annual physical concept be abandoned in favor of directed physical exams that focus on areas of interest based on the patient's medical history. One site states "In the 1970s and 1980s, both the Canadian Task Force on the Periodic Health Examination and the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended abandoning the comprehensive systemic examination in favor of case-finding maneuvers during regular visits." www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov Michael Guth, PhD, JD is a guest of the "Money and Personalized Medicine" show and discusses his views about this exam in detail.
