If you knew that your 401K, pension and social security would guarantee you $45,000 per year to live on, would you retire? Is $50,000 the magic number? $60,000? Do you need $75,000 per year? Or more?
For this question, please assume that you are single and that you don't have much debt. You can assume your health is ok, and that your life expectancy isn't unusually long or short. Please also assume that you don't care about leaving an estate.
Please also assume that you don't want to travel the world and go on a cruise every month. This question is directed to tired middle class folks who have put their kids through school, been paying off their mortgage for 20+ years, and who know they'll never be able to reach that million dollar retirement account.
This is partly a life style question, and partly a financial question. Each of us can do our own math to calculate insurance, utilities, and other retirement expenses. We can also all do actuarial calculations to figure out how long we could live. At some point though, some of us have to weigh whether our jobs might kill us before old age does. There is a magic number, where working to try to get retirement income as high as possible stops being the best choice.
