Open Question: How negotiable are health insurance premiums?
I have Aetna Student Health, and my son has been covered under my plan since he was born last November. My husband recently lost his job, so I wanted to add him to my insurance plan. I contacted Aetna, and they quoted me $978 for his premiums. I already paid $837 for the same time period for my son. Aetna's published premiums for Spouse+Children for that time period are $1,398. Basically, Aetna is charging me the separate premiums for my spouse and child, rather than the discounted spouse+child rate. This means that we will have to pay about $400 more for insurance during a time when we really need to be pinching pennies. When I asked Aetna why they won't give me the combined rate, they just said that they can't because it is a qualifying life event, with no other reason. Is there anything I can do about it?
